Getting In Is Only Half The Battle

Archive for the ‘College/University Admissions’ Category

In somewhat of a followup to a previous post about Facebook friending admissions officials, apparently some schools have instructed their admissions officials to automatically deny FB friend requests.

Problem solved, I guess.

Youthtoday.org published an article that talks about some pitfalls of relying too heavily on technology when trying to get accepted to a school, or more importantly when trying to figure out your EFC(Expected Family Contribution)

FTA:

“Having a personal connection with a student, I’m more willing to go out on a limb for them,” said Wise, who is responsible for handling applications from youths in the City of Baltimore, including those involved with the city’s CollegeBound program.

The Huffington Post has an article by Jenifer Fox which discusses the idea of getting the school that’s a good fit rather than “the best”.

Another insider’s look at the college admissions process was published in August, 2009 and Time Magazine has a little Q&A with the author David Marcus.

The Time Magazine article can be found here.

A full-on review of the book can be found here.

A new book came out today…

Admission is written by Jean Hanff Korelitz, who was an admissions officer at Princeton a few years ago.

Sounds pretty interesting…

Do I really have to answer this one?

Several articles on this can be found here, here, and here.

Bottom line, this should be a no-brainer. A college admissions official isn’t your friend and it seems that giving them access to the kinds of information you put on facebook can only serve to hurt you. You may want to be using it to gain a ‘competitive edge’ with the admissions office, but do you really have the discipline not to put something that could even potentially hurt you on your FB page?

And while you’re at it, restrict your posts et. al to just your friends. How many stories have we read about people losing jobs offers or having college entrance rescinded because of something on facebook?

Reader’s Digest (.com) published an article today called 5 Tips For College Entrance.

Give it a read and see how many are surprises.
